As a college student, my drug of choice is coffee…Starbucks coffee to be specific. My friends will tell you that I am not exactly fun without my venti skim coffee of the day. So naturally when I go to India for five weeks in a row, I am classified as “cranky†to put it in the best terms. However, this is all about to change.
For all my fellow desi Starbucks lovers out there, I have some good news. Our wait is now about to be over. Last month, Starbucks Coffee Company and Tata Coffee signed an agreement officially declaring that they will soon be opening locations all over India. Some sources say that the first shop might open as soon as six months from now!
I had always thought that Starbucks wasn’t targeting India because tea was much more in demand than coffee. However, the coffee consumption in India has more than doubled to 100,000 metric tons from a decade ago.
As much as Starbucks is probably celebrating their potential gain from tapping a consumer population over one billion, I am doing my own personal happy dance excited about going to India enjoying an iced venti coffee on hot day.
How do you feel about Starbucks expansion in India? Progress or bad for ma and pappa shops?
