“First” Asian Victoria’s Secret model?

Who doesn’t love the Victoria’s Secret Fashion show? Our favorite icons of the lingerie world sauntering down the catwalk bedecked in the some of the most fun and fantastic contraptions of the year… And talk about an Asian fan base! Ever since Liu Wen signed with Vicki’s for 2009-2010, Asians everywhere have been clamoring about her participation as the “first” Asian model with Victoria’s Secret.

Little do most realize… It’s not true!

I mean, yes, Wen is strutting her stuff for Vicki’s. In fact, she is currently Victoria’s Secret’s only Asian model and also recently signed as Estee Lauder’s first Asian spokesmodel. But is she the first Asian Vicki’s model? Nope.

Yasmeen Ghauri posed for Victoria’s Secret in the 1990s.

Die-hard Victoria’s Secret fans are quick to correct: We’re forgetting Yasmeen Ghauri, one of the original Victoria’s Secret models. Half-Paki, half-German Yasmeen was the first Asian model to walk for Victoria’s Secret. She may also be the only model of Muslim descent that Victoria’s Secret has ever hired. Ghauri also posed for top design houses including Chanel, Hermes, and Lanvin. She was one of the highest-paid models of the 1990s.

Technicalities aside, we love the Asian representation going on in the Vicki’s lineup! Hopefully, it’s just a matter of time before another South Asian throws her (feathered) hat into the ring.
